Assessment

Each year, Sweet Briar participates in a number of national surveys to gauge attitudes and opinions of incoming first year students, to assess learning outcomes and career aspirations of seniors, and to better understand the dimensions of student engagement. Faculty also participate in a national survey every three years. Results from recent surveys are shared below.

CIRP (Cooperative Institutional Research Program) Freshman Survey

The CIRP Freshman Survey has been given almost every year at Sweet Briar since its inception in 1966. This survey, given during orientation, collects demographic and attitudinal information on students. A national norms report, The American Freshman, is produced each year based on data from hundreds of participating schools from across the country. The CIRP can be merged with data from YFCY and CSS to yield a longitudinal profile of students.

YFCY - Your First College Year

The YFCY is given to first year students after Spring Break each year. It was designed as a follow-up to the CIRP or Freshman Survey and as such offers a longitudinal glimpse of student development during their first year.

Senior Surveys

We administer the HEDS Senior Survey in alternate years with the College Student Survey (CSS) during April. The surveys compliment one another and help to evaluate student experiences, satisfaction, and outcomes and development measures. The CSS contains many identical survey items to the CIRP, permitting its use in a longitudinal view of how students have changed since entering Sweet Briar. The HEDS Senior Survey is useful because it also includes a student organization participation record, more satisfaction ratings, and over twenty items relating to future plans.

NSSE - National Survey of Student Engagement

The NSSE provides information about the quality of undergraduate experiences that is based on looking at aspects of engagement by students in their learning environment. The survey is divided into five categories termed “National Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice”: Level of Academic Challenge, Active and Collaborative Learning, Student-Faculty Interactions, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Campus Environment. The survey allows Sweet Briar to evaluate its value added quality in both effective teaching and learning activities.

Faculty Survey

The Faculty Survey is given every three years. The survey allows faculty members to compare themselves nationally on a number of issues including workload, teaching practices, scholarship, and job satisfaction. Please contact the Institutional Research Office for access to these reports.
