Art Gallery Planning

Decision to develop Long Range planning as a regular function within the Friends of Art (FOA). 1990. Friends of Art to serve as advisory to Art Gallery director.

Areas of concern for the art gallery and the Friends of Art

May, 1996 Strategic plan document. Decision to focus on purchasing new works for the permanent collection that would support Sweet Briar's mission as a woman's college. FOA decided to focus on collecting works by women, especially contemporary women artists. Ancillary goal is to organize a traveling exhibition from the collection once a cohesive group of objects are assembled.

Art Gallery Professional Development

Participation in American Association of Museums' "Museum Assessment Program I (1994) and II (2000-01). These assessments lead the way to seeking accreditation with the American Association of Museums.

Exhibition Planning

Decision to develop purposes and focus areas for the three gallery spaces on campus and to emphasize student involvement in the art gallery. Spring 1998.

Development of professional level curatorial research projects for students through the Honors Summer research program. Student-created exhibitions with associated catalogs. Summer 1995

Outreach

While Art Gallery has participated in the annual Arts Day program for all Amherst County 5th graders, and gave tours of its exhibitions on-demand, its outreach program was not formalized until 1996, when the art gallery teamed with the Amherst County public schools to develop tours that would meet Standards of Learning objectives. Begun as "The Classical World in Virginia," the tour program has become an ongoing multi-disciplinary tour for 3rd graders.
