Overview of Assessment and Programmatic Change

Student Activities and Programming

The Student Activities and Programming department has experienced significant changes during the last decade. In 1987, a student survey on planning issues was given to the general student population, and it mentioned the need for "Big Name" speakers and entertainers to come to Sweet Briar College. Hence, the report given to the Board of Directors that year expressed a highly desirable need to bringing a "big name" event to campus. Such an appearance of popular, high profile individuals would generate excitement and enthusiasm on campus, would "bring the city to the country", and it would have great value to the admissions /enrollment program and to public relations in general. (Please see 1987 survey located in CCL binder.)

At that time, however, the office of Student Activities did not exist in an official capacity. From 1987 to 1995, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs handled the duties of the office of Student Activities. She was the direct advisor to the SAB (Student Activities Board), Sweet Briar News (student newspaper), and several other student organizations. She was also the professional staff member who signed all entertainment contracts and was the contact for agencies. (Please see 1989 memo to Student Affairs staff on roles, located in CCL binder.)

Personnel change in the Dean of Student Affairs in 1995, also initiated a change in Student Activities, wherein a Director having set responsibilities was appointed. The position became a full-time salary position in 1996. The office was called Co-Curricular Programs and had a director who oversaw all aspects of student organizations. (Please see April 1996 Memo from Martha Woodroof, located in CCL binder.)

In 1999, Co-Curricular Programs became Student Activities and Programming under the Co-Curricular Life Division. Currently we have a Director who oversees the CEO (Campus Entertainment Organization), Sweet Briar Voice (student newspaper), Inter -Club (student organization governing body), and five other student organizations.
